BIOGRAPHY:
James Dudley Slay III was born on October 2, 1953, in Jackson, Mississippi.
He began his formal art training at the
New England School of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts. He later studied at
Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, and
Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
The most influential period in J. D. Slay's painting began in 1984, while studying with Russian master
Sergei Bongart. Slay continued his study with other influential artists such as
Karl Dempwolf,
Mario Mirkovich and
Frank Serrano.
At present, J. D. Slay primarily paints out of his studio in Long Beach, CA. His paintings prominently feature imagery of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Central Coast, San Gabriel Mountain Range, Southern California beaches and deserts. He has won awards with the
Torrance Artist's Guild,
Lakewood Art Association, and
San Gabriel Fine Arts Association. His work resides in private collections worldwide.
Slay's work is on permanent exhibit at the
American Museum of Art in Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, Russia. Slay exhibited at the
South Coast Botanic Gardens of Palos Verdes in 1993, and also at the juried
All Media Exhibition at the
Palos Verdes Art Center in 2006.
